Central Department

Head of Department: Ph.D. Gvozden Dumicic

The Central department's role is coordination of technicians' work and ensurance of optimal use of trial plantations and equipment in order to enable scientific and professional projects' implementation.

The main buildings of the Institute, in Duilovo, are fitted to the needs of the laboratory research activities (viticulture and enology, soil science, plant nutrition, fruit and vegetable growing, fruit and vegetable processing, plant tissue culture, plant protection, molecular biology and microbiology). The small building-refrigerated space was renovated in an experimental wine cellar.

At its experimental plantations the Institute maintains its collections of native, indigenous and introduced plant species. The building of the Institute is surrounded by test sites (greenhouse - 1.3 ha; annual and perennial crops - 1ha). At another 5 ha of trial plantation in Kastel Stari there is an experimental oil mill and long-term crops. In the area of Sibenik, Muc and Split surroundings permanent sample plots have also been established in order to study the selection of species and methods for afforestation of Mediterranean karst areas and the impact of forest vegetation on soil protection from erosion.
